Frenectomy
Restrictive oral tissues can interfere with everyday activities like breastfeeding, speaking, and eating. A minimally invasive procedure called a frenectomy may help.
Understanding the Frenectomy Procedure
If your child is experiencing difficulties with speech, eating, or oral hygiene or is affected by a tongue-tie or lip-tie, a frenectomy may help. This gentle approach can restore freedom of movement and prevent long-term complications. A frenectomy is a minor surgical procedure that removes or releases a frenulum, a small band of tissue that can restrict movement in the tongue, lips, or cheeks. Dr. Goh uses the latest techniques and technology, and the procedure and recovery are quick and relatively pain-free.
-
Is a frenectomy painful?
Thanks to the use of numbing agents and, in many cases, laser technology, the procedure is quick and typically painless. The laser seals the tissue as it cuts, which minimizes bleeding and speeds up healing. After the procedure, patients may experience mild discomfort or swelling, but these symptoms usually resolve within a few days. Most children can return to their normal activities immediately, and infants often immediately show improvements in breastfeeding.
-
How do I know if my child needs a frenectomy?
Signs that your child might benefit from a frenectomy include difficulty with breastfeeding, speech problems, trouble sticking out the tongue, oral discomfort, or gum recession due to a tight lip-tie. Poor latch or inadequate milk transfer during nursing are common indicators in infants. For children, challenges with certain sounds, such as “r” or “l,“ may point to a restrictive frenulum. During your consultation at Smiles by Goh, Dr. Goh will perform a thorough examination to determine if a frenectomy is the best solution.
-
Are there risks or complications associated with a frenectomy?
Frenectomies are considered low-risk procedures, especially when performed with laser technology. However, as with any surgical procedure, there is a small chance of minor complications, such as slight bleeding, swelling, or temporary discomfort. In rare cases, scar tissue may form, or the tissue may reattach, requiring further intervention. At Smiles by Goh, we provide detailed aftercare instructions and follow-up to ensure optimal healing and reduce the risk of complications.
